What is a Community Cafe?

Community Cafes are gathering places for seniors, age 60 and older, who enjoy a hot midday meal and conversation with friends.  Each meal is designed by a Registered Dietician to provide the appropriate complement of protein, vitamins and other nutrients.

Services:

Healthy food is provided at CRT's Community Cafes to people over 60 and their spouses.  A friendly atmosphere and delicious meals bring people together.  Most cafes are located in senior housing complexes, churches and community centers.  Quarterly nutrition education is provided.

Eligibility Requirements:

The program serves people over 60, and their spouses, regardless of age.  Reservations are required a minimum of 24-hours in advance, by calling the center where you want to eat.  The cafe at the Ellington Senior Center serves meals on Mondays and Tuesdays.  Reservations for Mondays lunch must be made by 11 am on the Friday before.  For Tuesdays lunch, reservations must be made by 11 am the Monday before.

A $2.50 donation is requested to help cover the cost of the meals, however no one is denied a meal if unable to pay.

History:

Established by the Older Americans Act of 1965 and funded by the North Central Area Agency on Aging (NCAAA), the Elderly Nutrition Program provides nutritious meals for older people, particularly those with the greatest social and economic needs.  Meals are served in Community Cafes and delivered to homebound clients.  The program also helps relieve isolation and links clients with other social and rehabilitative services.

Community Renewal Team was founded in 1963 and is Central Connecticut's Community Action Agency.  CRT helps individuals, families and communities work toward a stable and successful future.  Programs include Head Start, meals on Wheels, homeless shelters and supportive housing, criminal justice services, and programs for youth.  To make a contribution or find out how CRT can help you, please call 860-560-5471.
